Leadership Team

Led by Carl Mitchell, Executive Chairman, Shepard’s leadership team has a wealth of diverse talents and experience that work collectively to ensure our business is conducted with the highest ethical, moral, and legal standards to best serve our customers and associates. When faced with tough decisions, the leadership team is charged with doing what is right and sound, regardless of its financial impact; all while encouraging and fostering well-being, growth and innovation in an ever-evolving industry and workplace.

Carl F. Mitchell, Executive Chairman

Carl Mitchell has spent his entire career in the trade show industry, starting with Manncraft in Atlanta in 1971.  He was appointed vice president and general manager of GES in 1976, moving up to regional vice president of GES in 1978. Carl purchased Shepard with his then partner, Sherman Wade, in 1982.

Carl has served on the boards of the Atlanta Convention Visitor Bureau, the local boards of the American Red Cross, and the National Kidney Foundation.  He was one of the original commissioners representing the convention services companies on the APEX Initiative of the Convention Industry Council.  In addition to all of this, Carl has served on the board of the Exhibition Service Contractors Association, acting for two terms as ESCA president.

With Carl leading a tremendous team of dedicated employees, Shepard has grown from a single, Atlanta location to multiple locations nationwide.

Steve Basch, Chief Executive Officer

Steve Basch, began his career at PriceWaterhouseCoopers after which he spent 10 years as Vice President of Operations for a logistics company. During the past four years, he has served as Shepard’s Vice President of Finance, where he has succeeded in key roles of capital planning and strategic organization, including his instrumental role in implementing Shepard’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), a program that provides associates with an ownership interest in the company.

Frank Villamar, Chief Financial Officer

Frank is a seasoned professional having received his first Master’s degree in Accounting from Florida State University. After successfully establishing himself in the accounting and “start-up” spaces, he decided to earn his second Master’s degree from Emory in 2007, and from there has held titles like Controller, Senior Director of Finance, and VP of Finance. Most recently, he was the Chief Financial Officer at Turnberry Innovations. Outside of work, Frank enjoys spending time with his wife and four dogs, traveling, and wine tasting.

Richard Maples, Executive Vice President of Sales 

Over the past twenty years, Richard Maples has evolved into a recognized leader in the event services industry. His expertise in the areas of sales, customer service, operations, marketing, and education has contributed significantly to sales growth and expansion of Shepard. He is a generous contributor of his time and expertise within event industry organizations, the community, and his church. His work ethic and integrity inspire those who know him to work hard and achieve their own life goals.

Susan Hall, Vice President of Talent

Susan Hall is a seasoned human resource professional with more than 20 years’ experience building and developing the HR function for companies such as GTE Wireless (now Verizon Wireless), Portman Holdings, and Spanx.  Hall joined Shepard in July 2015 as VP of Talent, spearheading the development of human asset strategy, implementing human resources policies and procedures, and complying with federal and state regulations related to employment and benefits. Her position is also responsible for the well-being of all associates in connection with safety, benefits, training, performance management and career development. Hall earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Communications from Valdosta State University.  When she’s not at work championing for Shepard associates, she enjoys spending time with her husband, twin daughters and Australian Shepard, Indie.

Jody Weathington, Director of Information Technology

Jody Weathington started his career at Shepard in 2005 where he has progressed from warehouse associate to logistics and accounting. In 2009, he took over as IT Director.  Jody holds Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Managerial Sciences. Jody is the proud father of four children; two boys and two girls.
